The Last Kingdom
There isn’t a TV show that will come as closest to Game of Thrones as The Last Kingdom does. The only thing it lacks it the mega-budget that Thrones had. The Last Kingdom is the story of the unification of England. The show hasn’t reached the point of unification as of yet, but its territories keep expanding. The story begins when the Danes capture Uhtred, a young successor of Saxon earldom, and raise him as their own. After he has grown, the same people test his loyalties. There are warring factions all for power. Season 5 of The Last Kingdom ended its run on April 26 2019.
Outlander
Outlander is available both on Starz and Netflix. Just like TLK, it is a historical drama television series. Outlander is written by Diana Gabaldon is based on the novel series of the same name. The series covers time-travel when the lead Claire is transported to 1743 and into a mysterious world where her freedom and life are at stake. Her earlier life was as a British Army nurse in World War II, enjoying a second honeymoon in Scotland with husband Frank, an MI6 officer. Season 5 of the show finished its run on May 5 2020.
Vikings
There’s a conversation amongst fans of Vikings and Game of Thrones as to which show is the most brutal one. Vikings has done a pretty great job so far in maintaining the gore factor of the screen. If you are a fan of violence, we will highly suggest this show for you. The story deals with Travis Fimmel’s Ragnar Lothbrok, a Norse hero, who rises from farm life to become commander and warrior of the Viking tribes. The last of Season 6 of Vikings aired on February 5 2020.
The Witcher
We know, we know. We are a little late on mentioning The Witcher. The show served as a decent memorial to those who love Game of Thrones since it came immediately after it. The Witcher is a fantasy drama series based on witcher Geralt’s life. He is a mutated monster hunter who finds his own in a world full of wicked humans. The Witcher was one of Netflix’s most-awaited shows and a Netflix original.
The Tudors
The Tudors as the name says is of the life and times of King Henry VIII’s reign. He served for 40 years (1509-1547) as the king of England during which numerous challenges, fortitudes, friendships, alliances became a challenge for him. Along with his two famous female companions like Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, Henry took things in his stride. The most significant challenges were those with Cardinal Wolsey, head of the Catholic Church of England during its break with Rome. The Tudors aired the final episode on 20 June 2010. Norsemen
We know what you are thinking but stay with us on this one. Norsemen is your funnier version of HBO’s Game of Thrones. It is a comedy TV show about Vikings of the 8th century who are in the middle of political rivalry, and social upheavals that threaten their culture and way of life. Norsemen airs on Netflix. The latest episode aired this year on March 13 2020. Fun Fact: Norsemen stars a bilingual cast who shoot every episode in both Norwegian and English.
Into The Badlands
Into The Badlands comes straight from AMC. There is just way too much action on the series, it consists of nerve-wracking and thrilling martial arts sequences. That isn’t to say that there are any less drama and character development on the show. It is as fantastic as ever. There are two recommendable things with regards to this show, one, if you are a fan of action, this is one of you. And two, it combines this meaningful action into a drama based on feudalism. Season 3 of Into The Badlands finished its run on May 16 2019.
Todd McFarlane’s Spawn
Here is a show different from the rest in the series and that one is Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. This show is one of the oldest in this compilation and it aired on HBO in the ’90s. It is interchangeably known as Spawn: The Animated Series. It aired for three straight seasons on HBO from 1997 through 1999. The story deals with a trained government assassin, Al Simmons who is betrayed and killed in battle. He returns to life to protect his family from the forces, both from heaven and hell. Since it belongs to the “fantasy” genre, it will as much remind you of Game of Thrones. Besides, the show is also known to racking up Emmy’s along the course of its run.
Castlevania
We bring you another animated suggestion in the list called Castlevania. Like The Witcher, it is inspired by the popular video game series of the same name. It is a dark medieval fantasy that tells the tale of the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan. Trevor Belmont is somehow trying his best to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hands of Vlad Dracula Tepes. Season 3 finished its run on 5th March 2020 and the series is up for another season. You can catch the show on Netflix.
House of Cards
House of Cards is neither this nor that, but it is totally something else. In that it is an American political thriller that set out to tell the tale of a Democrat, Frank Underwood, appointed as the secretary of state. After Kevin Spacey was written out of the show, Claire Underwoods played by Robin Wright took the lead as a conniving woman in power. It aired for six straight seasons, the last of which aired on November 2 2018. It will remind you of the same political thrill that Game of Thrones has.
